What is the defination of Meta Tags
Meta tags are small, one-line, pieces of code which descibe your website to Search Engines and any robots which spider your website.
Meta tags used to be a topic of great importance, Optimization and Meta tags went hand and hand. Nowadays the importance of Meta Tags is lessening a bit because of the growing complexity of search engines.
Should I still use Meta Tags
YES... Many search engines, and spiders still use your Meta Tags for information about your website; and afterall they will not hurt, so of course you should still have them.
To me, there are only three META TAGS which are important. Your KEYWORDS tag, DESCRIPTION tag, and ROBOTS tag.
In the Keywords meta tag, you should list 7-12 keywords which you find best relate to the content of that particular webpage on your site.
In the Description meta tag, include one or two sentences decribing to a potential viewer of the page what to expect. Try to include in those sentences 2-4 of your keywords also, but make sure that your sentences make logical sense, and it never appears as keyword spamming!
Last but not least, the Robots tag. Search engines, and many other internet services, have automated programs which scour the internet for new websites: these are called Robots or Spiders. When the robot comes to your page, it will read your Robots meta tag (if it exists) to decide what to do with your page. If you would like it to list your page, set its value to ALL, or INDEX. If for some reason you dont want it to use your page, then set the value to NOINDEX, or NOFOLLOW.
Focus your Optimization to the actual content of the website; the most important parts include your TITLE, HEADERS(H1 tags), BOLD text, and keyword density. Just remember to keep it honest, and never place optimization over your visitors experience!
