The Linux Windows Debate

So which Operating System is better?
Linux or Windows?

The debate about which operating system is best... Linux or Windows.

The Debate: Linux / Windows - Lets start with what an operating system actually is.

An Operating System is something that we take for granted these days. The average user does not understand how the computer works, they just know it works. Your operating system, aside from all the hardware, is where all of that 'black box' activity takes place. Without an operating system your computer would just be an expensive paperweight.

Think of it like this... When you plug in a light-bulb it just turns on. When you turn on a computer, it is exactly the same thing.

An electrical signal is ran through the computer, the same way it would as if it were to turn on a light bulb. The difference being that the computer modifies the incoming charge, and manipulates it. The simplest manipulation is the translation of ons and offs, 0s & 1s.

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) handles the low level configuration of the computer, such as where to boot to, processor and memory settings, etc.

LINUX vs. WINDOWS
Whats the difference between Linux & Windows?

The number one difference is how they are made. This difference is what will most likely determine the winner in the Operating System race for the future.

Windows, as you likely know, was created by the Microsoft Corporation. Linux on the other hand was created by a single man(initially), Linus Torvalds, and is currently touted as better and faster operating system for certain tasks.

Aside from the fact that Windows is so widely accepted, the problem with getting the Linux ball rolling is that there is a bit of a learning curve involved. With Windows, the developers have made the system so that all the simplest tasks are one or two click away. Making it ideal for the average user. Linux on the other hand, has almost always been reserved for the computer experts, and many beleived you had to know how to program in order to use it. That is just not the case nowadays. New distros are becoming easier and easier for the average user to use. In many cases, looking alot like Windows or OS X.

The key difference is the Linux was not created for profit, wheras Windows was. Linux is open source, and therefore anyone in the world can see how it was made, and change it for themselves and others. If an error were to occur in Linux, the user encountering that error might find the solution, and fix it immeadiately.

This applies not only to problems, but to features. If any single user figures out a way to make the system run faster, everyone benefits. Because of the Linux generally comes with a plethora of options & add-ons available, free of charge.

I personally think that Linux is the better operating system (in theory), but the problem is the basic laws of Supply and Demand. Far, far more people in the world use Windows... and Microsoft is fighting to keep it that way. Since there is much higher demand in the Windows sector, most programs/software is made for the Windows operating system.

Linux is better, because it is honest!
How can an operating system be 'honest'?

Linux will be the superior operating system in the future because of this. When there is a problem with Windows, Bill Gates has to pay his programmers every-time to patch it. Whereas with Linux, it is open source... therefore no person owns it, so any person / company can come in at any time and make Linux even better.

Think about the concept behind each...
LINUX- Free, made for everyones use.
WINDOWS- Expensive, made for profit!!!

Open source software will eventually win the battle, it is only a matter of time.
